UX / Mobile App & Responsive Website

Nexus

As part of my study to earn my Google UX Design Certificate, I was tasked to design 3 projects the last of which was to design a user experience for social good.

The Prompt:

Design a User Experience for Social Good

Date

June 2023 - July 2023.

Role

UX Designer / Researcher

Notes:

Normally these prompts would be randomly generated, but the ones I were getting didn't seem useful or impactful. Thus I decided to design a project that was more relevant to where I was living  the Philippines.

The Challenge:

The Philippines is one of the world’s most impoverished countries. Although the lower bracket of Filipinos are highly skilled manual laborers, a majority are either unemployed.

The Goal

To help skilled manual laborers look for freelance gigs online by offering up their skills for service.

Meet Dado

Dado is happily married and is the father of two children. To get by, Dado works a variety of jobs such as carpentry, plumbing, electricity, and lawncare. Since he's self-employed, his living depends on the demand for his skills. However, his gigs tend to come intermittently so he may go for days or weeks without work. Dado wants to expand his repertoire of clients, so that he can earn more frequently, and ultimately provide better for his family.

Test Findings

Study Type: Moderated Usability Study

Participants:5

Length: 20-30 Minutes

Location: Philippines

Add More Services

One note that stood out the most was that users wanted to add “housekeeping” to the services offered as they often needed on-call housekeepers for general cleaning.

Search Locations

Users wanted to be able specify which locations to search for jobs, as opposed to letting the app find jobs within their current location.

Lack of Directions

Users wanted an easy way to find directions to their clients place without having to ask for directions.

Responsive Website Design

The role of the website was to help educate the user on the app's uses and benefits.

Eventually, the flow would funnel the user into downloading the app in the proper channels.

Impact

Users shared that they would immediately use this app if it came into fruition. One quote from peer feedback was that “it’s difficult to look for labor jobs because they just didn’t have a rotation of regular clients.”

Learnings

I learned that even though the problem was quite complex, diligently going through each step of the design process and aligning with specific user needs helped me come up with solutions that were both feasible and useful.

Thank you :]
